Behold the power of flowers

Festive Occasions, by Barbara Jernigan
|
The Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg on Saturday begins its annual weeklong salute to flora as art.
Art in Bloom kicks off Saturday night with La Vie en Rose, an evening of music, a preview of floral arrangements that complement the museum's art collection and a silent auction. The original watercolor Festive Occasions, by Barbara Jernigan will be sold at the auction. Tickets are $75. (The arrangements will remain throughout the week and can be viewed during regular museum hours.)
On Sunday, the museum sponsors a free Sprout Festival, with art activities, plants and other displays outside the museum from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the museum also is free on Sundays.
The museum usually is closed on Mondays, but will open from 1 to 5 p.m. this Monday for Lifestyles in Bloom, featuring botanical displays and lectures, with information about ikebana, cacti, flower arranging and more. Tickets are $15 and include museum admission and tea in the garden.
Art in Bloom concludes Saturday, March 23, with a garden tour at Dolphin Cay. Tickets are $15. For more information, call the museum at (727) 896-2667.
Art auction takes center stage
The Much Ado About Art live auction relocates to the Renaissance Vinoy Resort's Sunset Ballroom at 600 Snell Isle Blvd. this year, but returns with the same format that has made it a successful fundraiser for a decade. It benefits the participating artists and American Stage's Shakespeare in the Park.
The lineup includes Les Slesnick, Rocky Bridges, Lynn Whipple and James Michaels, all award-winners at the recent Gasparilla Festival of the Arts; Nancy Cervenka; Bask; Kevin Bourgeois; Fong Choo; Leslie Neumann; Denis Gaston; Felipe Packard and Ricardo de la Vega; Betsy Orbe-Lester; and Lance Rodgers, who will be honored for leading the volunteer effort since the auction's inception at Salt Creek Artworks 10 years ago.
Actor Michael Ironside, who appeared in The Perfect Storm, will add star quality to the event.
Also new this year is an admission charge, $20 in advance and $25 at the door, which will be refunded to those who purchase art. Free hors d'oeuvres, cash bar. Preview at 6 p.m., auction at 7 Friday. For information, call 823-1600, ext. 203.
