Elementary school and USF link upBy STEPHEN HEGARTY, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published May 1, 2002 ST. PETERSBURG -- Students and professors at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg will be going back to elementary school, specifically at the nearby Campbell Park Elementary campus. The USF St. Petersburg Campus Board gave its blessing Tuesday to an agreement with the Pinellas County schools that will give USF a big presence on the soon-to-be-rebuilt Campbell Park campus. Under the Pinellas school district's new "choice" plan, Campbell Park will emphasize environmental science and marine science to lure parents to the school. USF St. Petersburg, which has nationally renowned programs in those areas, will help develop the curriculum and help teach the children. USF will even have a classroom at the new $10-million state-of-the-art school and a daily presence on campus. "It really makes sense for us; these are our strengths," said USF St. Petersburg campus CEO Bill Heller. Three USF programs will be involved: environmental science, marine science and teacher education. The elementary school is about a mile from the waterfront university. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
