TV producer enters race with flourishBy BILL VARIAN, Times Staff Writer© St. Petersburg Times published May 8, 2002 TAMPA -- Charles Perkins, the producer of a raunchy public access television program, has decided to take his show on the campaign trail. Perkins, host of The White Chocolate Show, submitted paperwork Tuesday to run for the Hillsborough County Commission. He will challenge Democrat Tom Scott, the incumbent for the District 3 seat representing central Tampa. Scott was running unopposed. Wearing a white fur coat and draped with gold chains, Perkins was accompanied by Dave Flood, a radio personality known as Dave the Dwarf, who wore a similar outfit. Perkins said he wants to provide help for small-business owners and establish an office in the heart of the district to keep up with the problems of real people. He also pledged to donate his commission salary to Tampa police to increase patrols. "I sincerely want to get elected," he said. A small crowd gathered outside the County Center about 11 a.m. when Perkins arrived with friends and a box. Perkins said it was a gift for Commissioner Ronda Storms, who has sought to end funding for public access because of Perkins' show. Out of the box popped Flood, holding an envelope containing Perkins' filing papers. Perkins is registered as an independent but will run without party affiliation. He said he wants to fight crime and lobbyists' influence on county decisions. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
