Northeast grabs title with another shutout

Northeast captured its second straight District 5 major baseball title Tuesday with a 4-0 victory over Pinellas Park National in a rematch of last season's championship game.

Left-hander Gordon McLean tossed his second one-hitter of the tournament and extended Northeast's shutout streak to four games. Northeast outscored its opponents 23-0 during the eight-day tournament.

Catcher Mark Sheddan went 2-for-3 for Northeast and scored two runs.

SENIOR BASEBALL: Gulfport overcame a five-run deficit to beat Meadowlawn 13-10. Ben Layner's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning capped off the rally. Reliever J.T. Gonzalez tossed six innings and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh to preserve the win.

JUNIOR BASEBALL: Justin Cox struck out seven in a complete-game four-hitter to lead Pinellas Park American over Gulf Beaches 14-6. Third baseman Jimmy Wareham drove in three runs with a single in the top of the sixth to start an eight-run rally.

MINOR BASEBALL: Thunder Dome defeated Pinellas Park National 11-2 to advance to the West Division championship game. Ellis Weaver struck out six in a complete-game effort and also went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

JUNIOR SOFTBALL: Seminole advanced to the championship game with a 12-2 win over Cross Bayou. Megan Lucy and Brandi Pruitt combined on a six-hitter. Catcher Sydney Grundmann went 4-for-4 with six RBIs and Steffi Foss added three hits for Seminole.

MINOR SOFTBALL: Pinellas Park National edged Seminole No.2 19-18 to advance to tonight's West Division championship game. Pinellas Park National's Ziara Ledford hit three home runs, including a grand slam. Pinellas Park National scored the winning run in the sixth inning when Kara Obere tagged and scored on Jenna Rimensnyder's lineout to first base.

Azalea advanced to the East Division championship game with a 6-5 win over Meadowlawn. Jessica Cleveland pitched a no-hitter for Meadowlawn, but a bases-loaded walk to Azalea pitcher Megan Perry allowed Katie Williams to score the winning run.

Seminole No.1 eliminated Southwest with a 12-7 victory. Seminole No.1's Ashley King struck out six batters and went 2-for-4.
