By JOHN BALZ and BILL COATS Red Cross certifies school as new hurricane shelterNEW TAMPA -- A new shelter in the New Tampa area will be available for this year's hurricane season. The Red Cross has certified that Chiles Elementary School in Tampa Palms is able to withstand 130 mph winds. Chiles opened last fall and is named for former Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles. The Red Cross has not yet tabulated the capacity of the school but the certification brings the total of New Tampa school shelters to four. Benito Middle School on Cross Creek Boulevard, Wharton High School on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Pride Elementary in Cross Cree can also handle evacuees. Lutz residents compete in mock 'guv'na' debateLUTZ -- Last year's guv'na debate starred a mannequin. The year before, three candidates were goaded into bare-chested limboing. What will this year's debate bring? Find out 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lutz Community Center. Guv'na is a lighthearted competition in which the candidate raising the most money becomes Lutz's mock chief of state on July 4. Last year, six candidates raised a record $20,767, which was distributed among community causes in Lutz. This year's candidates are Cheryl "Southern Belle" Benton, representing the Lutz-Land O'Lakes Woman's Club and the Lutz Volunteer Fire Department; Stacy Ironside, representing her business, the Body Spa Salon & Boutique; and Brett "Style Kitten" Montegny, representing her business, Classy Consignments. Thursday's meeting, sponsored by the Lutz Civic Association, also will feature presentations from candidates for serious offices, including state representative and county judge. -- JOHN BALZ, BILL COATS
