Bowl-a-thon to benefit sexual abuse hotlineCOUNTRYWAY -- Bowlers who want to help raise money for a sexual abuse crisis hotline are invited to a bowl-a-thon at 1 p.m. Sunday at Crown Lanes on W Hillsborough Avenue. "I'm hoping for as many groups as possible, because the more groups the more money," said Lorraine Alomar, event organizer. Alomar, 21 and a student at the University of South Florida, is asking bowlers from Countryway and elsewhere to join the bowl-a-thon to raise money for RAINN, the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. "It's an organization that's done a lot of good," said Alomar who has hosted several other fundraisers for the organization since April. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, comprised of more than 1,000 affiliates, is a national anti-sexual assault organization that operates a hotline at 1-800-656-4673. Alomar said the Washington, D.C.-based RAINN, which does not receive government assistance, has helped more than 440,000 victims of sexual assault since it was founded eight years ago. Victims of rape or any other sexual abuse can call the 24-hour confidential number from anywhere in the United States and be connected with the local member center nearest them, Alomar said. Alomar is asking for a $5 minimum donation from bowlers who will be eligible for prizes which will be awarded for the most money raised as well as for the highest and lowest scores. Prizes include gift certificates from Publix and Hooters and tickets to Disney World and the Holy Land Experience, a biblical history museum in Orlando. For information, call Alomar at 767-6232. Basketball hoops must be stowed, group saysWESTCHASE -- A breakaway faction of homeowners seeking less restrictive rules on portable basketball goal usage was shot down last week. Residents of the Chelmsford neighborhood sought a variance in the stringent Westchase guidelines governing portable hoops. Throughout the development, the rule says that hoops must be stowed away when not in use. But 76 of Chelmsford's 100 homeowners signed a petition asking that the hoops be allowed up all the time in their neighborhood only. Voting members, a group of neighborhood representatives who serve as a sort of parliament, denied the request 15-5. * * * -- JACKIE RIPLEY, LOGAN D. MABE
