Tampa comes to life on canvas
Sergey Grebeniouk has had a busy year. The 28-year-old Russian has lived in Tampa since October 2001 but has produced 75 oil paintings of the city.
"Tampa Landmarks and Lookouts" will be on display at Hoffman Porges Gallery Saturday through Nov. 16. Grebeniouk's plein-air canvases capture a 21st-century metropolis as if seen by a 19th-century impressionist, with a dash of expressionism thrown in.
Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday. An opening reception is 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. 1907 E Seventh Ave. in Ybor City, Tampa. (813) 247-2000.
Weekend workshop by renowned potter
Potter Elmer Taylor comes to St. Petersburg Clay Company for a weekend workshop and exhibition. Taylor, a professor at the University of North Texas, apprenticed with the late Michael Leach, son of legendary English potter Bernard Leach, who fused Japanese aesthetic with a craft-movement sensibility. Like his mentors, Taylor hews form to function.
The Clay Company relocated this year to the old Seaboard Coastline Railroad Station, 420 22nd St. S. With studio space, teaching areas and 22 kilns, including an anagama, it is one of the pre-eminent ceramics facilities in the Southeast. Workshops with Taylor are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, $100 for both days, $50 for one day, $60 for both days for students with ID. Meet the artist at a free reception 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. (727) 896-2529.
