P. Diddy or no, it's a show
The Last Damn Show, hosted by radio station WLLD-FM 98.7, promises a special guest star: hip-hop mogul P. Diddy and his Bad Boy Family -- that is, if the producer/fashion designer/lousy rapper formerly known as "Puff Daddy" shows up. You know how these multi-bill hip-hop/R&B concerts can be. Folks book every star under the sun, then cross their fingers and pray three of them make it onstage.
Luckily, there is other talent on the bill including rappers Trick Daddy and Cam'ron. City High will also perform as well as easy-on-the-eyes neo-soul singer Angie Martinez.
The Last Damn Show begins at 7 p.m. Saturday at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg. $18.87-$25.87. (813) 287-8844 or (727) 791-7400.
A get-together with Martin Sexton
Troubadour Martin Sexton is known for his three-octave voice, so emotive it can bring folks to tears. Is he a folkie? Sexton, who spent years on Boston's folk circuit, writes poetic tunes steeped in folk, sure, but also in the blues and jazz.
Sexton brings it to the stage as a minimalist would, usually just him, his guitar and a drummer. It makes for an intimate affair. Not that it's mellow. Chatty Sexton can work a room.
Sexton will probably have plenty to talk about, what with his major label dropping him and the recent creation of his Kitchen Table Records. The delicious irony is that Sexton is making more money -- and getting more critical acclaim -- doing it on his own. Bravo.
Martin Sexton performs with Chris Trapper at 8 tonight at the Orpheum, 1902 Avenida Republica de Cuba, Ybor City. $13. (813) 248-9500.
