To celebrate pets -- and to show ways to prepare four-legged or feathered friends for disaster -- Animal Planet rolls into Clearwater this weekend with its massive disaster response Animal Planet Rescue vehicle, plus fun activities for families and pets.
Pets are welcome to this free event sponsored by Time Warner Cable, the American Humane Association, the city of Clearwater and Animal Planet.
Activities include dog agility and obedience training demonstrations, a kids area with costumed characters and crafts, pampering sessions for pets with pet masseurs, and appearances by Dr. Holly Knor from Animal Planet's series Emergency Vets.
Tours will be offered of the 80-foot Animal Planet Rescue disaster relief vehicle, which is a veterinary hospital and shelter on wheels. It has sleeping quarters for up to 12 people, a mobile veterinary clinic, a four-wheel-drive ambulance, three rescue rafts and a high-tech command center for American Humane volunteers.
Animal Planet Rescue has come to the aid of more than 1,000 pets and animals nationwide during disasters, beginning with the wildfires in Flagler County in 1998, rescuing animals ranging from birds to iguanas. The team also assisted animals affected by the terrorist attacks in New York City.
