This week's generic romantic comedy is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, following the worn-out formula of matching actors who can't carry a film alone, playing attractive, combative characters realizing they're right for each other in the final reel.

Swallows returning to Capistrano aren't as predictable. Or any less messy. This time, it's Matthew McConaughey, left, as Benjamin Barry, a ladies man betting he can maintain a love connection for at least 10 days. Kate Hudson, right (Almost Famous, but not quite), plays journalist Andie Anderson -- aren't those names adorable? -- writing a how-to article for chasing away a lover in the same amount of time. Of course they find each other at this cosmic time in their lives and hilarity ensues. At least that's what Paramount Pictures would like you to believe. I'll bet that in 10 days the movie gets lost in the megaplex shuffle.
