Acing the test of timeJimmy Buffett comes around these parts often because Tampa Bay area folks never tire of the Florida boy's tunes about quirky characters and good times. Cheeseburger in Paradise for the 14-millionth time? Heck, count us in! Changes in Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes, Margaritaville and Fruitcakes, Buffett's ode to kooks, are just a few of his timeless, singalong gems.

Cher

Cher is another who knows characters. The Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves warbler has made a career -- and don't the locals love this gal, too? -- of singing about life's more colorful folk, including herself. Who cares if the most interesting thing she has done in years was the hilarious cameo on Will & Grace? Cher brings decades of hits, including Half Breed, Dark Lady, The Beat Goes On, and, of course, I Got You, Babe from the early years. The later hits include If I Could Turn Back Time and the superhuge 1998 smash Believe.

Let's hear it for the Florida boys in Further Seems Forever. The Pompano Beach emo punk band has gained quite a national following since back in its early incarnation when Chris Carraba led the band. Of course, Carraba went on to form MTV2 darlings Dashboard Confesssional and FSF is now fronted by the mighty wailing Jason Gleason, foreground. Other band members are, from left, Brandon Swanson, Chad Neptune, Josh Colbert, Steve Kleisath and Derick Cordoba.
How To Start a Fire, the band's new disc, arrives in stores this month, and it's filled with more punchy hooks and melodic punk. FSF has a good sense of humor, too, with the moxie to record a charmingly faithful rendition of 'N Sync's Bye Bye Bye (available on the Fearless Records compilation Punk Goes Pop).
Further Seems Forever performs with Elliot, Early November and Salem at 7 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre, 687 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. $8. (727) 895-3045.
