Canadiens shake off skid, shut out Caps

WASHINGTON -- Before Sunday, letting Mathieu Garon play in goal was about the only thing the Canadiens had not tried to end their four-game losing streak.

That streak disappeared after 25 saves from Garon in his first start of the season, a 2-0 win over the Capitals.

"I think it was really important for us to end that streak," said Garon, who was called up Jan. 24 after Montreal dealt Jeff Hackett to Boston. " I hadn't played for three weeks and I felt like I played last night. I felt really good."

Saku Koivu and Jan Bulis scored for Montreal, which moved within a point of Tampa Bay and the Islanders in the Eastern Conference. Washington, which had won three of its past four, tested Garon throughout in just his 17th game. He turned away short-range chances by Jaromir Jagr and Michael Nylander. Jagr failed to earn a point for the first time in six games.

Also, Montreal defenseman Patrice Brisebois returned home after spending the night in a Toronto hospital with an irregular heartbeat caused by stress. Cardiac tests were normal, spokesman Donald Beauchamp said. The 32-year-old will be evaluated later in the week.

Devils' Brodeur sets mark for goalies

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Martin Brodeur stopped 19 shots for his league-leading 30th win of the season, leading New Jersey 3-2 over Minnesota. He has won 30 games for the eighth straight year, which no other goalie has accomplished.

Brodeur made a sprawling glove save on Andrei Zyuzin midway through the second to thwart a scoring chance, then kicked aside three shots in the frantic final 32 seconds to preserve the win.

"It's a good thing that this is now out of the way," Brodeur said. "It's a great accomplishment and I'm pretty excited about it. No one else has ever done it, so it has to mean something."

The victory moved New Jersey within a point of the Senators for the league's best record.

AVALANCHE 4, FLAMES 2: Peter Forsberg got his sixth hat trick and host Colorado extended its unbeaten streak to nine (7-0-2). Jarome Iginla and Craig Conroy had third-period goals for Calgary.

STARS 3, KINGS 1: Mike Modano and Rob DiMaio scored in a 48-second span of the second period for host Dallas. Los Angeles took a 1-0 first-period lead on Derek Armstrong's eighth goal. Modano sealed it with 2:19 left on his 23rd goal for the Stars, 17-0 at home when leading after two.

MIGHTY DUCKS 2, HURRICANES 1: Paul Kariya got his 20th goal and Jason Krog had his first career short-handed goal for host Anaheim. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 28 saves for the Ducks, who dealt Carolina its sixth straight loss. Anaheim has a two-point edge over Chicago for the final Western Conference playoff spot.

SHARKS-PENGUINS TRADE: San Jose traded defenseman Shawn Heins to Pittsburgh for a conditional 2003 draft pick.
