Freshman hoists Jackets past skidding Terps

ATLANTA -- Jarrett Jack got a chance to chat with his favorite player, then went out and played like him.

The freshman point guard scored a career-high 20, banking in a crucial 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining, and Georgia Tech beat No. 8 Maryland 90-84 on Sunday.

The Terrapins have lost two in a row, and they gave up 90 points for the first time this season.

Jack was inspired by the presence of Stephon Marbury, in town for the NBA All-Star Game. The former Georgia Tech star sat a few rows behind the Yellow Jackets' bench.

"I talked to him before the game," Jack said. "He told me to come out and play hard. It's a great feeling.

"He's my favorite player, and I modeled my game after him."

The defending national champions certainly will tumble in the new rankings today, losing again on the heels of an 86-78 defeat at home to Virginia.

"We're human," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "People are spoiled. We're a very different team this year."

Georgia Tech continued its Jekyll-and-Hyde season by improving to 11-0 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The Yellow Jackets have yet to win a road game, picking up their only other win at a neutral site.

B.J. Elder led Georgia Tech with 23 points, including two key baskets that stemmed Maryland runs in the second half.

"He's college basketball's biggest secret," Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt said of Elder. "That's fine with me."

Georgia Tech never trailed after a 14-0 run in the first half.

NO. 10 NOTRE DAME 66, NO. 4 PITT 64: Chris Thomas found Torin Francis inside for the winning basket with .6 seconds left as the Irish overcame a 10-point deficit to win their 13th straight home game.

Thomas, who led Notre Dame with 24 points and eight assists, drove past Brandin Knight to the basket but stopped and found Francis underneath as the Irish beat the Panthers for the fifth straight time at the Joyce Center.

Pittsburgh had one last chance, but Jordan Cornette swatted the inbounds pass by Jaron Brown as time expired.

NO. 9 DUKE 65, CLEMSON 55: Dahntay Jones scored 13 of his 15 in the second half as the host Blue Devils beat the Tigers for the 15th straight time and moved a half-game behind ACC-leading Wake Forest.

Student Krista Shirley was removed from Cameron Indoor Stadium on a stretcher after falling ill but apparently was okay.

CINCINNATI 61, NO. 11 OKLA. ST. 50: Jason Maxiell scored a career-high 24, giving the host Bearcats a long-sought inside threat as they ended a three-game losing streak.

Cincinnati was desperate after a skid that prompted coach Bob Huggins to banish the team from its posh locker room. The Bearcats never have lost four in a row during Huggins' 14 seasons.

NO. 15 MARQUETTE 68, NO. 14 WAKE FOREST 61: Robert Jackson scored 19 and Dwyane Wade had 18, including a memorable 1,000th point, as the Golden Eagles won their 28th in a row at home.

Wade's milestone came on a breakaway dunk, his third of the game, that was part of an 8-0 run that gave Marquette a 53-43 lead.

NO. 16 ILLINOIS 76, OHIO ST. 57: Brian Cook scored 22 and reserve Roger Powell added 14 as the Illini built a 32-point lead, then held off a late rally. Illinois made a season-high 12 3-pointers in winning its 14th straight home game.

NO. 21 MISSOURI 82, TEXAS TECH 73: Arthur Johnson had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and the host Tigers dominated inside, outrebounding the Red Raiders 38-21 and getting 13 on the offensive end. Missouri is 11-0 at home.

NO. 25 STANFORD 84, OREGON ST. 73: Julius Barnes had a career-high 33 points as the visiting Cardinal won for the eighth time in 10 games and bounced back from a 79-64 loss to Oregon on Thursday.

NO. 18 UCONN: Coach Jim Calhoun was released from the hospital three days after having his cancerous prostate removed. The 60-year-old Calhoun is expected to resume his coaching duties in three to four weeks, doctors said.

ACC

UVA 61, N.C. STATE 58: Travis Watson scored 15, including two free throws to give the host Cavaliers the lead with 2:41 left, and Virginia followed a victory at Maryland with another key win.
