ZEPHYRHILLS - City Council members Monday night approved an agreement with Pasco County, modifying fire service protection in districts outside the city limits.
But their approval is contingent upon adding a description of exactly what "modified responses" means.
County fire chief Anthony Lopinto outlined how his department and Zephyrhills' will work together during the next two years. Basically, Zephyrhills will act in support of the county for structure fires and medical calls. Lopinto's memo was not originally attached to the agreement.
The county will pay Zephyrhills $195,000 for support service next year - half of what Zephyrhills collected in 2003. The following year, the amount drops to $98,000.
City Manager Steve Spina said the new arrangement, an obvious financial blow to Zephyrhills, will take some getting used to.
"It's new territory," Spina said. "We're going to have to monitor it."
