DOVER - For more than 30 years, golfers have been teeing off at the Diamond Hill Golf and Country Club. Now lovers of the links can live there.

Ryland Homes has begun construction of nearly 500 homes on land adjacent to the 188-acre course, although owners of both properties emphasize there's no connection between the two. People who live in the Diamond Hill community will have no special privileges at the public course, other than the few dozen homeowners who will be able to see it from their living rooms.

Ryland is building 2- to 5-bedroom single-family homes at Diamond Hill with from 1,259 to 3,566 square feet of living space and prices ranging from $143,990 to $289,990.

Three model homes are open, including the Charleston, a 4-bedroom, 31/2-bathroom 2,933-square-foot home with a 3-car garage that starts at $258,990 including the lot.

Standard features in the Charleston include ceramic tile in the foyer, kitchen and bathrooms; Corian countertops and a built-in microwave in the island kitchen; a covered lanai; a built-in desk outside the laundry room; tray ceilings in the formal dining area and master bedroom; and a garden tub with a separate glass-enclosed shower in the master suite. Ten- to 12-foot ceilings and lots of windows throughout the home give it a bright, airy feel.

The Charleston model boasts a full panel of upgrades - a raised sitting area with a stone floor in the master bedroom; a swimming pool with a hot tub; an outdoor kitchen; a window seat in the breakfast nook and a built-in entertainment center flanked by bookshelves in the family room. The model with all the add-ons would sell for about $400,000.

To get to Diamond Hill from State Road 60, go north on Valrico Road and east on Sydney Road. Diamond Hill will be on the right. The models are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 661-6185.
