Day Tripper

Royal spectacle for the masses

The race is on.

In just five years, the Little Everglades Steeplechase has become a premier equestrian event.

In horse racing circles, the event has gained stature because of the superior track and amenities for the jockeys, horses and spectators.

It is the first race of the steeplechase season and includes four events: a race for first-time horses, one for horses who have never won a race, a stakes race which carries a purse of $40,000, and a Sport of Kings race that adds points to the winners' overall season tally.

Horses clear 52-inch hurdles as they race to the finish line. Races vary from 11/2 to 2 miles, and there is a race for Florida-bred horses.

For many spectators, however, the thrill of the hunt isn't as alluring as the pomp and circumstance that occurs alongside the track. Elaborate chapeaus, carriage parades and fancy tailgate parties with gourmet cuisine invite another kind of competition.

An aura of 19th century elegance permeates the event as visitors wearing vintage costumes stroll the grounds on foot and in fancy carriages. There are Jack Russell terrier races, an antique and classic car show, contests, pony rides and vendors who sell jewelry, antiques, horse tack, souvenirs and food.

Proceeds benefit the YMCA and Florida Pioneer Museum and Village.
