RIVERVIEW - Hillsborough school officials on Tuesday night rolled out plans for a new high school to serve west Brandon and relieve crowding at several existing high schools.
Construction could begin in late April, once necessary permits and approvals are obtained. The new high school would provide relief to East Bay, Bloomingdale, Riverview and Blake high schools. It would sit along Eagle Palm Drive, east of Falkenburg Road South.
The 2,500-student high school could open as soon as August 2005, when classes also are scheduled to begin at new elementary and middle schools in the area.
Several residents living near the proposed school site attended the Tuesday night meeting at Ippolito Elementary in Riverview. Community members voiced support for the school.
Community members will have several opportunities to comment on the proposed school site, which requires a zoning change and a public hearing with representatives from the Hillsborough County Commission. Once the county approves, the school board will conduct another public hearing before cementing plans. Anyone wishing to comment on the proposed site or obtain additional information may write to Jill Lemmons, Property Manager, Hillsborough County Public Schools; 901 E. Kennedy Blvd.; Tampa, FL 33602. The office must receive comments by March 12.
