I was not surprised to read once again that condo owners in downtown St. Petersburg are complaining about concerts at Vinoy Park. First they complained about airport noise, car races and boat races. Did they not realize that these events go on downtown and by buying a condo downtown, these were things they would have to live with? What's next - banning Fourth of July fireworks because they are too noisy? Mainsail because it brings too much traffic?
Also, I can't believe that the City Council is now considering picking and choosing who can play in the park. I did not go see 50 Cent or The Nutcracker. Why? These are not shows I personally enjoy. However, other people do and it is their right to attend and enjoy events at the waterfront. I hope the City Council will do the right thing here and let all acts play. As Jay Lasita put it, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Vinoy Park belongs to everyone. I hope the council follows his lead.
