National Salvation Army Week is being celebrated locally with several events, including a special service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.
Today, a Salvation Army canteen will serve fresh doughnuts and coffee at the corner of Central Avenue and Fourth Street.
"We want to remind people that we are there for them and that we do more than kettles at Christmastime," said Lisa Paulson, associate development director for the St. Petersburg Area Command.
"We operate an emergency shelter for small children. We operate a village of foster homes and we have many senior programs. We also provide emergency assistance for families in crisis."
Thursday, a lunch and seminar will be held in the fellowship hall at the Salvation Army Community Center, 3800 Ninth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. Jack Levine, president of Advocacy Resources, will give a talk, "Powerful Partnerships for Our Children and Families," after lunch, from noon to 1:30 p.m. A seminar, "Understanding the New Philanthropy: Accessing Time, Talent and Treasure," will follow from 2 to 4 p.m. A panel of experts will discuss skills and strategies for improving organizations' public awareness, volunteer commitment and financial resources. Reservations are required for lunch, $25, and the seminar, $15. Call Lisa Paulson, 727-550-8080, ext. 232.
