Let everyone have chance to see, judge Moore's film

Published August 1, 2004

Re: Why no "Fahrenheit 9/11' here?, July 28 letter to the editor:

Editor: I, too, questioned the Beacon Theatre on why Fahrenheit 9/11 was not being shown.

The answer I was given was that the distribution company only distributes a certain number of movies to theaters, and Hernando County was not included on the list. They also informed me that it took them five months to receive Calendar Girls after they requested that movie.

I was not quite convinced at the time and still am not. I had to drive to the Crystal River Mall theaters to see Fahrenheit 9/11. I hope the movie theaters in this county are not practicing censorship for political reasons and are adult enough to let people view the movie and form their own opinions.

If Fahrenheit 9/11 is filled with inaccuracies then let individuals decide for themselves. After all, isn't that what America is all about?

It may be time to take business to other counties

Re: Why no "Fahrenheit 9/11' here?, July 28 letter to the editor:

Editor: I totally agree with Boris Stephens of Brooksville.

The Times lists movies for eight counties, from Marion to the north and Sarasota to the south, and all counties are showing this movie except Hernando. Our family had to drive to Citrus County to see the movie.

We are told to "Shop Hernando," but maybe when I need an automobile, new television or furniture, I'll just go to Citrus, Pasco or some other county.

Pet license fee punishes owners for good deeds

Editor: We have 10 cats, all of which were strays we took in. Each was taken to the vet, fixed and given their rabies/combo shots every year since. For being responsible pet owners, Hernando County wants to penalize us and charge a license fee on top of our yearly cost.

This is to monitor compliance with state laws and prevent the spread of rabies. Isn't the rabies tag we receive each year proof of compliance? It's on record or they couldn't send us a card, which comes from Pet Data in Irving, Texas, not our county.

We've had our pets from four to 10 years. This law came into effect August 2003. I've been told we could face a fine, possible court appearance, even have our animals taken away.

What's next? A yearly renewal fee on our anniversary for our marriage licenses? If we don't pay, they'll take our spouse?

Do we start being irresponsible? No shots, no record and risk adding to the rabies problem? How well thought-out was this law?

The problem is the animals that aren't fixed and don't have rabies shots. How are they licensed?

I guess it's true in Hernando County; no good deed goes unpunished.
