The price of townhome ownership

By Times Staff Writer
Published March 4, 2005

If you live in a townhouse, expect lots of rules. At the Promenade in West Meadows, for example, there's a rule for everything from dogs to satellite dishes.

How many dogs can I have? First owners can have two dogs of unlimited weight. Subsequent buyers can have one dog weighing 20 pounds or less.

Do I have to register my dog? You must pay a $200 registration fee to the association, as well as provide proof of registration/immunization and a homeowners insurance rider, as well as a photograph.

Can I work on my car at the Promenade? You cannot work on your automobile (other than normal washing/vacuuming) outside. If the hood is up, it should be in the garage.

Where is it not okay to park? The grass, the street (which is all fire lane), the handicapped spaces (unless you've got a valid blue hang tag) and anywhere in the open if your vehicle doesn't have registration or is commercial.

Where is it okay to park? If you find your own garage door immediately in front of or behind your vehicle or if you find a white stripe on one side or the other of your vehicle, you are legally parked.

Can I put up a satellite dish? Federal law requires that you be allowed to put up a satellite dish. However, you must submit an architectural form so that the association may preapprove its placement in the least obtrusive location.

What changes require submission of an architectural form? Generally anything that is outside your home, with the exception of garden hoses, patio furniture, plants and patio barbecue grills.
