May full of 50th anniversary activities for Treasure Island

TREASURE ISLAND - The city of Treasure Island will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its incorporation with a monthlong calendar of weekend events in May:

May 7 - Rock Around the Clock, 4 to 11 p.m., 107th Avenue and Treasure Island Clock Tower.

May 13 - Movies in the Park, 7:30 p.m. to midnight, Treasure Island Community Center Park.

May 14 - Treasure Bay Gold and Tennis Tournament, 3 p.m., Treasure Bay.

May 21 - Armed Forces Day Fishing Tournament, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

May 21 - Potluckapalooza, 6:30 to 11 p.m., Treasure Island Community Center.

May 22 - Treasure Island and Home Show, 1 p.m.

May 27 and 28 - Sun, Sand & Symphony, 5 to 11 p.m., County Beach.

Indian Rocks Beach

The annual Teen Beach Party and Bonfire, sponsored by the North Beaches Branch YMCA, will be from 7 to 10 p.m. April 16 and will feature Providence, a local band that is gaining national acclaim. Free sodas and hot dogs will be served. All teens are invited. For more information, call 595-5610.

The Biggest Beach Party Ever will be sponsored this year by the North Beaches Branch YMCA beginning at 7 p.m. April 23. The event will take place on the beach between 17th and 18th avenues. A bonfire will be lit just after sunset. The fire will illuminate the beach for dancing. Soda, beer, wine and hot sandwiches will be for sale. For more information, call 595-5610.

Florida Blood Services will host a Blood Drive on April 15 at the Indian Rocks Beach Post Office, 204 Fourth Ave., across from the Indian Rocks Beach Historical Museum. Redington Beach

The Redington Beach Property Owners Association Inc. is offering a $1,000 scholarship and two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who reside within the town limits of Redington Beach. The association encourages all graduating seniors who live in Redington Beach to apply. Applicants must submit a one-page cover letter that includes name, address, current high school, high school accomplishments and future educational plans, as well as a 500-word essay titled "Challenges of Being a Teenager in Today's Society."

Redington Shores

The town's Annual Spring Cleanup will be Saturday.

Residents should place articles that are intended for pickup out at the curb Friday evening. Anything that two men can lift will be picked up, with the exception of 55-gallon drums, tires, car batteries and hazardous materials. In addition, two roll-off containers will be at the old Town Hall vacant lot on 177th Terace West and at the vacant lot at the southeast corner of Long Point Drive and First Street E on Friday and Saturday. St. Pete Beach

What if you organized a book club and nobody read the book? That is the premise of the British television series, The Book Group. Four 30-minute episodes, which were broadcast in 2002 and 2003 and are available only on VHS/DVD, will be screened Sunday at 2 p.m. at the St. Pete Beach Library, 365 73rd Avenue.

The Book Group has received the "15" (age 15 and over) rating and is recommended for mature audiences. A discussion of the programs and refreshments will follow. For more information, call 552-1762.

The St. Pete Beach Library is holding a Sidd Finch Trivia contest to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a classic story set in the area.

Contestants who answer a series of questions drawn from the book, The Curious Case of Sidd Finch by George Plimpton, will have a chance to win a voucher for two tickets to a Devil Rays game in "The Beach" section at Tropicana Field. Two grand prizes will be awarded to the two entries with the most correct answers.

If there are more than two qualifying entries, the winners will be drawn randomly from among all those with the right answers. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the St. Pete Beach Library or for sale at Perk Fiction, a coffeehouse/bookshop in St. Pete Beach.

The St. Pete Beach Recreation Department is offering a Tiny Tots class for children between the ages of 2 and 4 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The class features a combination of tap, ballet, pretumbling and creative play.

Children will need tap shoes, ballet shoes (or socks), leotards and tights, shorts or sweat pants, but no jeans. An adult Tappin' to Your Favorites class, featuring basic tap steps to favorite '70s and '80s music, is from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays. Adults will need to bring their own tap shoes.

Both classes are held in the Upham Room at the Recreation Center, 7701-Boca Ciega Drive. The cost for both children and adults is $30 for a five-week session. Instructor Wendy Benn can be reached at 363-4342. For more information, call Mary-Jo Golliner at 363-9244.
