Catholic carnival will add thrills

Christ the King will offer more rides and other features starting Thursday.

Dianna and Paul Callahan were married during the Christ the King Catholic Church carnival in 1987. Carnival music drifted from the midway to the altar as they exchanged vows.

Now with three children at the school, Dianna decided to lead the event this year.

"I figured since I was going to spend my anniversary there every year, I might as well get involved with it," said Dianna, who has volunteered at the carnival every year and was co-chairwoman, with Debbie Akers, last year.

The 42nd annual carnival starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by a talent show of parishioners at 7:30 p.m.

Last year, the carnival expanded to the former Piccadilly restaurant site next to the church. With that space now paved, organizers added several new rides, bringing the total to 25. The new rides, which include the Orbitor, Wipe Out and Power Surge, target older children.

This year, an expanded beer tent has umbrella tables and a view of the midway.

Also new is a Chill 'n Grill cookoff Sunday afternoon for those with a knack for grilling. Anything goes as long as it cooks in two hours. Judges will hail from local restaurants. Participants must register by calling the school at 876-8770.

On Saturday, school alumni can buy $20 wristbands and get access to a special seating area. The popular pig roast starts at 6:30 p.m. and lasts until it's gone. The local band the Persuaders will perform '70s and '80s hits from 7 to 10 p.m.

Other carnival entertainers will include the Christian group Brer and Asher Dance Eclectic, a Tampa dance company that includes wheelchair dancers.

Organizers hope the carnival raises more than $50,000. Proceeds will support Christ the King Catholic School's operating costs and help keep tuition low.
