Notebook: Paint Your Heart Out to help more than 100

TAMPA - More than 100 elderly and disadvantaged homeowners will receive a fresh coat of paint on their houses during the 17th annual Paint Your Heart Out Tampa on Saturday.

About 2,500 volunteers, including Mayor Pam Iorio, members of the Mayor's Youth Corps and city of Tampa employees, are scheduled to take part in the event, which starts at 8:30 a.m.

Eighteen of the houses are part of the city's Diversion Services Program, which helps elderly, low-income and disabled residents fix their homes to avoid code enforcement fines.

Cruise offers a trip back into history

CHANNEL DISTRICT - Sail back into history during SS American Victory's spring ReLive History Cruise on Saturday commemorating the ship's 60th anniversary.

The cruise departs from Berth 271 behind the Florida Aquarium and goes to the Sunshine Skyway bridge and back. Passengers board at 8:30 a.m. and return at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $95 per person and include a tour of the ship, continental breakfast, lunch, a memorial service, music, a fly-by of vintage aircraft and re-enactments of merchant marines.

"Taste of South Howard' help cancer foundation

SOHO - Get a "Taste of South Howard" from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday. Hop on and off HARTline's yellow In Town Trolley and enjoy appetizers at restaurants along Howard Avenue, including Bella's Italian Cafe, St. Bart's Island House, 42nd Street Bistro and 717 South. Venues will also offer drink specials.

Public is invited to "Q for Kids' barbecue

DOWNTOWN - The public is invited to the "Q for Kids" barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at downtown's Lykes Gaslight Park in honor of Voices for Children/Guardian ad Litem Volunteer Day.

Enjoy music and food and show support for more than 270 volunteers who advocate in the courts for children who have been neglected or abused.

The Heart Gallery will also unveil its newest photo exhibition featuring foster children seeking permanent adoption.

The cost is $7. Proceeds benefit Hillsborough County's Guardian ad Litem program.

Blue Ribbon Luncheon is for social workers

TAMPA - The second annual Blue Ribbon Luncheon in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Lawrence Higgins Hall, 5225 N Himes Ave.

WFTS-Ch. 28 anchor Wendy Ryan will emcee the luncheon for more than 600 social workers.

Area organizations, such as the Child Abuse Council, Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County, the Florida Department of Children and Families, and Healthy Families Hillsborough, are working to encourage businesses and individuals to wear blue ribbons throughout April as a reminder of the importance of preventing child abuse.

Ybor City Chamber's monthly luncheon set

YBOR CITY - The Ybor City Chamber of Commerce hosts its monthly luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Columbia Restaurant, 2117 E Seventh Ave. The event features guest speaker Susan A. MacManus, political consultant and political science professor at the University of South Florida.

"School House Rock Live!' musical at Falk Theatre

DOWNTOWN - The University of Tampa's Department of Theatre presents School House Rock Live!, a high-energy musical featuring classics such as Zero, My Hero, Unpack Your Adjectives and Conjunction Junction.

Wine store to pour favorites from "Sideways'

CHANNEL DISTRICT - Tampa Bay Uncorked celebrates its first anniversary by pouring different wines featured in the Oscar-winning film Sideways.

The anniversary party will feature wines exclusively from the Santa Barbara region of California, including the film's starring character Miles' favorite Pinot Noir.

The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Wine Design at Channelside, 615 Channelside Drive. Appetizers will be served.
