County close to securing land for sports complex

APOLLO BEACH - County officials held a meeting last week seeking input on the proposed purchase of 80 acres for the future Waterset Regional Sports Complex.

A handful of residents attended and wanted to know what facilities might be on the site. But county officials could not say, because the development may be years away.

Officials spent months looking for a tract of land in southern Hillsborough large enough to house a sports complex. They approached the developers of the Waterset community in Apollo Beach and asked whether they would consider selling part of their land.

The developers offered to sell 80 acres at $35,000 per acre, a price county officials said they couldn't refuse. The county had spent nearly 10 times as much on land for additions to the Northeast Sports Complex in New Tampa.

The county was told at the meeting that it had until Dec. 31, 2005, to close the $2.8-million deal with developers and that it must name the complex the Waterset Regional Sports Complex.

Also, if developers can't get final zoning approval for Waterset, the county must sell the land back at a preapproved rate.
