Will the beat go on?

Published January 6, 2006

For 32 years, the Brandon High Eagles have defeated all challenges to its consecutive-win streak, now at 418 victories. Today and Saturday, 14 teams will invade the Eagles' nest with hopes of beating Brandon.

Class-A defending state champions Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons, along with Miami Douglas, East Lake, Venice, Tampa Jesuit and Lakeland's Lake Gibson, are among the 14 teams seeking to break the streak.

Cardinal Gibbons, Douglas and Lake Gibson are the strongest of the challengers, even though the Eagles are favored to maintain their streak and add another four or maybe five wins.

At least six individual state champion wrestlers are scheduled to compete with hopes of winning matches against some of the Eagles' best.

The action will be today, starting at 5 p.m., and Saturday at 10 a.m. in three sessions. The championship match will be at 7 p.m. Saturday

Tickets are $5 per person per session at door at the Brandon High School gym, 1101 Victoria St.
