Published January 29, 2006

Catholic Schools Week 2006 begins today and runs through Feb. 4. Established by the National Catholic Education Association and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the annual event is designed to highlight the contributions of Catholic education in the United States. Here's a quick look at what local schools are doing to celebrate:

At Holy Family Catholic School, 250 78th Ave. NE, St. Petersburg, the week will include a student dressup day on Monday, a teacher-student swap on Tuesday, a parent appreciation day Wednesday, an academic bowl on Thursday and a teacher's appreciation day on Friday. Open houses will be held after the 9 and 11 a.m. Masses today, and from 9 a.m. to noon each school day. Call 727-526-8194.

At St. Petersburg Catholic High School, 6333 Ninth Ave. N, students and faculty members will celebrate the feast day of St. John Bosco - the founder of the Salesian Order of priests that administer St. Petersburg Catholic - on Tuesday with a Mass, luncheon and field day. A faculty/administration/staff appreciation luncheon will be Wednesday, along with the National Honor Society "Students Teach Students" day, where members of the society actually teach classes in various subjects. Thursday is student appreciation day, and Friday is parent appreciation day. Call 344-4065.

St. Paul Catholic School, 1900 12th St. N, St. Petersburg, will begin the week with a visit from St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker, who will read a proclamation to open Catholic Schools Week at 7:50 a.m. Monday. On Tuesday, faculty and staff will be recognized at the morning prayer and flag ceremony, and an open house will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A liturgy will be held Thursday, which will include presentation of spiritual bouquets to parish priests. Also, parents are invited to eat lunch with their children on specified days for each grade level. Call (727) 823-6144.

At St. Raphael Catholic School, 1376 Snell Isle Blvd., St. Petersburg, the weeklong festivities will include a school spirit day on Monday, with the annual teacher/staff and eighth-grade "kickoff kickball" game at 2 p.m.; a volunteer appreciation day and open house on Tuesday; and a student appreciation day on Thursday, where students will be allowed to dress as tourists visiting their favorite destination, and a 2 p.m. miniconcert performed by Christian rock artist Jeremy Hearn.

Transfiguration Catholic School, 4000 43rd St. N, St. Petersburg, will start off with a 10 a.m. Mass and open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. (Teddy bears collected at the Mass will be donated to the St. Petersburg Police Department.) Festivities also include a 1 p.m. spelling bee Monday, a teach-in from 9 to 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, a 1:30 p.m. faculty vs. eighth grade volleyball game, and a field day from 9 a.m. to noon Friday. A science fair will be held all week, with student exhibits on display throughout the school. Call 527-2880.
