This week's winner: Mike Dispenza of Treasure Island knew that litigious metalheads Metallica successfully sued Victoria's Secret in 1999 over unauthorized use of the band's name, for naming a lip pencil Metallica. The band had previously sued Pierre Cardin for the same sort of thing, and now that its members are no longer busy hounding Napster, they're suing a French perfume company for calling its new scent Metallica, which begs the question: Can't these companies come up with original names?
This week's question: Twenty-one years ago today, punk godmother Patti Smith married the late guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith, who in 1994, at age 46, died of heart failure. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mr. Smith played guitar in one of American punk rock's earliest -- and most political -- acts. To get your name in the random drawing for the jam kicking Weekend T-shirt, name the band in which Smith played.
