Duke, Stanford place 2 each on Wooden team

LOS ANGELES -- Shane Battier and Jason Williams of Duke, and Casey Jacobsen and Jarron Collins of Stanford are among the 10 players selected to the John R. Wooden All-America team Tuesday.

Others honored were Charlie Bell of Michigan State, Casey Calvary of Gonzaga, Joseph Forte of North Carolina, Troy Murphy of Notre Dame, Tayshaun Prince of Kentucky and Frank Williams of Illinois.

Battier and Murphy were members of the Wooden All-America team last year.

Battier, Bell, Calvary and Collins are seniors. Murphy and Prince are juniors, and Forte, Jacobsen, Frank Williams and Jason Williams are sophomores.

Balloting by more than 1,000 members of the media and college basketball experts was conducted over the past three weeks. The top five vote-getters and their coaches will be invited to the announcement of the 25th annual Wooden Award winner April 6 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

Among past Wooden Award winners are Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and David Robinson. Cincinnati's Kenyon Martin won last year.

Villanova hires Wright

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Jay Wright's first stint at Villanova came as an assistant a few years after the Wildcats' stunning 1985 NCAA Tournament championship. Wright, introduced as Villanova's coach Tuesday, hopes to return the Wildcats to the same heights.

"I think what fans are going to have to expect is a team that's going to play with great passion, a team that's going to play with great pride," Wright said.

Wright, who led Hofstra into the past two NCAA Tournaments, said he's thankful to be back in Philadelphia. The suburban Philadelphia native grew up watching Big 5 basketball and was an assistant at Villanova from 1987-92.

"This is just amazing. I really feel like I'm home," said Wright, choking up. "Once you're touched by the Villanova family, it sticks with you forever."

Wright, 39, replaces his friend Steve Lappas, who resigned unexpectedly Saturday after nine years to coach Massachusetts.

CAL: Coach Ben Braun, 47, signed a four-year contract extension after he led the team to three consecutive winning seasons.

CHARLOTTE: Forward Rodney White, who led Division I freshmen in scoring, will enter the NBA draft.

"I think I dominated college pretty well as a freshman," the 20-year-old said.

White, an honorable mention All-American, averaged more than 19 points in leading the 49ers to the C-USA tournament championship and the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

White has not signed with an agent, meaning he could return to school if he changes his mind.

EMPORIA STATE: Colorado assistant David Moe, son of former Denver Nuggets coach Doug Moe, was hired as coach.

JACKSONVILLE: Coach Hugh Durham was appointed athletic director. Durham, who will remain coach, had been the interim athletic director since March after Tom Seitz's resignation.

STETSON: Derek Waugh became the youngest coach in Division I when the 29-year-old interim coach was appointed to the position full time. He took over the Hatters on Dec. 27 when Murray Arnold retired for health reasons. Under Waugh, Stetson went 13-8, including winning a Trans America Athletic Conference game for the first time in seven years.

TRANSYLVANIA: Coach Don Lane retired after 26 years and more than 500 victories.

Lane, a member of the NAIA Basketball Hall of Fame, finishes with a career record of 524-254. That includes a 15-13 mark in one season at Indiana Southeast.

He was NAIA coach of the year this season, when Transylvania went 27-2, was ranked No. 1 in the country for the first time, and set records for victories in a season.
