Eight-run fifth propels Citrus past Crystal River

CRYSTAL RIVER -- Crystal River started Wednesday by winning two games but came up short in the only game that really mattered to it. The two wins came courtesy of Dunnellon, which had used an ineligible player in previous wins over Crystal River and was forced to forfeit them in the afternoon.

The loss came at the hands of Citrus, which used an eight-run fifth inning to power its way to an 8-2 victory, its fourth consecutive win and sixth in its past seven games.

"Nothing is disheartening for us," Crystal River coach Laura Wingate said. "We've been getting beat on so much, we're used to everything now.

"We'll just focus on the positives, not dwell on the negative, and hopefully, we can eventually come together as a unit."

The Pirates (5-8) looked like that unit for the first four innings, taking advantage of two fourth-inning errors to build a 1-0 lead entering the fifth.

In addition, starter Krystle Cummings had the Hurricane's number, holding them to just two hits while striking out six.

But that's when Citrus (11-5) and its bats took over. Consecutive one-out base hits by Krissi Castiglione, Brittney Doyle and Jessica Macdonald loaded the bases for Alycia LePage, who snuck a hard-hit ball to left-centerfield for a triple.

Mettina Maggiore followed with a single that scored LePage. Consecutive walks to Amber Presnick and Whitney Gelin reloaded the bases for Amy Bowen, who singled home two more runs.

The final two runs scored on a single by Candace Pekins and an error.

"They made some errors, but they came back and made up for it at the plate," Citrus coach Scott Waters said.

"We've been hitting well, but we did come out a little flat. We went though the lineup once and really didn't do anything. But I could tell they were seeing the ball well the second time through."
