Scallops are making a comeback in Tampa Bay.
|
In the late 1950s and throughout the '60s, pollution from industrial and municipal wastes, as well as large-scale dredging operations, muddied the water of Tampa Bay and caused the scallop industry to collapse. But as water quality improved, scallops began to make a comeback. In an effort to gauge that recovery, Tampa BayWatch sponsors The Great Bay Scallop Search every summer. Volunteers are needed to snorkel along set transect lines in lower Tampa Bay and count scallops. If you would like to participate in the Aug. 19 event, call (727) 896-5320.
