INVERNESS -- There may be an administrator shortage, but there is certainly no shortage of people who want to fill the nine available administrative positions in the Citrus public schools.

By Friday's deadline, the district had accumulated 99 applications, with some individuals applying for multiple positions.

Personnel director Sam Stiteler credited employment advertisements on the Internet as one reason for the number of applicants.

Officials are assembling interview teams as additional information is sought from some applicants. Stiteler and the teams have not yet identified applicants who do not meet the criteria for the various jobs.

School-based jobs will likely be the first priority; the goal is to get many of the job recommendations to the School Board in time for consideration at its regular June meeting, Stiteler said.

"We're in crunch time now," she said, noting that filling these positions will create other openings and the domino effect could affect schools and the county office for some time.

The openings and information about some of the local applicants include:

Longtime Crystal River High School principal Craig Marlett announced his plans to leave the principalship several weeks ago. That job has eight applicants including Bob Brust, the director of planning who was not asked back to that position by Superintendent David Hickey; Hugh Adkins, assistant principal at CRHS; and Cynthia Ladkani, a teacher at the school.

At Citrus High, principal Gary Foltz was not asked back by Hickey. There are eight applicants for that job including Brust, CHS assistant principals Howard Hawk and Rick Darby, and Lecanto High assistant principal Mike Mullen.

A third principalship will open when Mary Curry at Citrus Springs Middle School moves to the county office as executive director of management services. There are 14 applicants for her job including Adkins, Brust, Citrus Springs assistant principals Bill Farrell and David Stephens, Lecanto Middle School assistant principal Cherise Cernich, and Inverness Middle School assistant principal Mark Klauder.

Stiteler was not reappointed to her personnel director's job and will become the new assistant director at the Withlacoochee Technical Institute. There are nine applicants for the job of personnel director. They include Brust; Inverness Primary School principal Terry Charles; Lecanto High principal Steve Richardson; and David Watson, whom Hickey declined to reappoint as executive director of management services.

Brust is also an applicant for the director of planning job to which he was not reappointed. There were seven other applicants, including Watson and Floral City Elementary School assistant principal Gail Grimm.

James Hughes was appointed to the job of executive director of support services, leaving vacant his old position, coordinator of student services and equity. There are 13 applicants including Marlett, Foltz, Brust, Watson, Forest Ridge Elementary assistant principal Rich Hilgert, Crystal River High School assistant principal Tony Whitehead, and Inverness Middle School assistant principal Jack Brady.

Also open are two assistant principal positions at Crystal River Middle School and one at Homosassa Elementary. There were 23 applicants for the middle school jobs and 16 for the Homosassa Elementary position.

After the applicants who do not qualify are weeded out, review teams will determine interview schedules, talk with the applicants and make recommendations to Hickey. Hickey then will take his recommendations to the School Board for consideration.
