Marsh fire still smolderingBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published May 15, 2001 FLORAL CITY -- Despite three days of effort by firefighters, a marsh fire continued to smolder Monday in the dried-out bed of Bradley Lake. Citrus County Public Safety director Charles Poliseno said the fire was about 60 percent contained. Firefighters spent most of Monday extinguishing hot spots, a task they will continue at least the next few days, he said. Smoke continues to be a problem in the area. County Road 48 between Old Floral City Road and Trails End Road was closed from 9 p.m. Sunday until about 6 a.m. Monday because of excessive smoke. "People need to be careful traveling through that area," Poliseno said. The marsh fire flared up Friday afternoon. By Sunday, it had consumed more than 550 acres. Damage is estimated at between 550 and 600 acres, Poliseno said. No structures have been damaged in the fire, and no injuries have been reported. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
