PLAYHOUSE 19 OPENER: The musical Cabaret has performances this weekend at Playhouse 19, 865 U.S. 19 S, Crystal River. The play runs Thursdays through Sundays until Sept. 30. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15. Call the box office at 563-1333.

SWAT PARTY: The Citrus County Students Working Against Tobacco, will have a tobacco-free party from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Citrus County Fairgrounds, inside the Riggs Building. The party's theme is a Kick-Ash Bash, and will feature a video DJ using a 17-foot screen, sound system and special effects. Other activities include airbrush tatoos, human foosball and bungee-running events. Drinks and snacks available. Free admission. Security provided by the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

HOMOSASSA GATHERING: The Red Turtle Lodge is having a fundraiser Oct. 13 and 14 at the Homosassa Riverside Resort. The Homosassa Harvest Gathering includes American Indian dancing and drumming, with grand entry processions at noon and 4 p.m. Other activities include educational talks by American Indian artists about their works. The Red Turtle Lodge is a non-profit organization based in Lutz that helps Native Americans. Call (813) 971-8782. Admission is $2.

SCARECROW FEST: The 14th annual Scarecrow Festival will be Oct. 26-28 in downtown Crystal River. Events include a children's carnival, fine arts and crafts, antiques and educational exhibits. Entertainment includes a Boo Walk, which is a pet costume contest, a haunted hay ride, plus the scarecrow building and pumpkin decorating contests. Call Laura Lou Fitzpatrick 795-9589.

APPLETON EXHIBIT: "Once in Our Lifetime," a major exhibit of 19th century art, continues through Dec. 6 at Appleton Museum of Art, 4337 E Silver Springs Blvd., Ocala. Important works from Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne, Vincent van Gogh and others will be featured. Museum hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $11.50 for adults, $5.50 for Appleton members, $9.50 for seniors, $21.50 for a family pass, $5.50 for youths age 10 to 18 and $7.50 for university students and educators. Children under 10 are free. A similar exhibit of 20th century masters, featuring two works by Pablo Picasso, is scheduled for February through April. Call (352) 236-7100.
