Disturbances real and cinematic
John Travolta plays a divorced father whose son is endangered by his ex-wife's new husband (Vince Vaughn) in Domestic Disturbance, opening Friday nationwide. A public disturbance on location in Wilmington, N.C., last April earned a measure of notoriety for the film. Vaughn was briefly jailed and co-star Steve Buscemi (Fargo, Monsters, Inc.) was hospitalized with knife wounds after a nightclub scuffle with an intoxicated local man who was later convicted of assault. Previews for the movie appear to spell out the entire plot, but perhaps director Harold Becker (Sea of Love, Malice) still has a few surprises up his sleeve. Domestic Disturbance was previewed too late for inclusion in Weekend. See Friday's Page 2-B for a review.
Good Jet Li vs. bad Jet Li
Martial arts experts are commonplace in films today, but Jet Li is The One. At least, that's the title of his new film, a science fiction adventure. Li actually plays two roles: A ruthless killer slipping through 123 alternate universes to murder his alter egos, and a Los Angeles sheriff's deputy who happens to be one. The climactic fight between good Li and bad Li reportedly took four weeks to film with stunt doubles, computer effects and flying rigs for defying gravity. Expect quantum leaps in metaphysical logic and lots of grunting.
