If mirrorballs and gin and tonics will get you in the holiday groove more than twinkling lights and eggnog, you may want to roll into Tampa Jewish Community Center's annual Matzoh Ball this Sunday at Tahiti Joe's.
This nomadic event has been bouncing around Tampa longer than anyone can accurately remember. It has been in hotels, clubs and synagogue function halls. This time they're going all-out and having it at one of Ybor City's wildest dance-on-the-bar clubs.
If you remember the event in the past, you know the focus has been on singles, a mixer of sorts. But not this year. Organizers made sure the event would be well-rounded and open to anyone looking for something to do. The only requirement: you must be at least 18 years old.
Besides the obvious draw of thumping music and great drink specials, there will be a raffle for a JCC Federation family membership worth $425. The membership will get you into the gym and all JCC functions.
If that isn't enough, there will be free munchies and people from across Florida to add to the party. More than 18,000 invitations were sent out to people in Orlando, Sarasota and Pinellas.
Non-perishables will be collected for the Tampa Jewish Federation Society's Food Bank, in keeping with the spirit of giving.
And if you were wondering, there is no matzoh at the Matzoh Ball.
