Under 21 Dance Jam back for winter break

CARROLLWOOD -- The "under" in Under 21 Dance Jam is emphasized during teen night at Club Joy on Tuesday and Jan. 2.
The former location of Stingers reopened as Club Joy in 1998 and offers something that Ybor City does not: nights set aside just for teenagers.
For almost two years, teen night has been a regular feature in the summer and when kids are on holiday break.
Club owners said they check IDs and reject those older than 21. They also reject those who are not dressed appropriately. At a teen night last summer, a young man wearing a Chicago Bulls T-shirt was sent home to change into a shirt with a collar.
Clothing with numbers, sports logos or anything that could be gang-related is not allowed. The boys are patted down, and the girls' purses are searched.
"There has never been a problem with weapons or drugs inside the club," said co-owner Peter Hannouche.
During teen night, the pounding beat of techno, house and hip-hop music, usually played by WFLZ's DJ Structure, vibrates from the speakers. Pyrotechnics are set off on the center stage once each night.
Groups of teens wave glow sticks. Some grind on the dance floor while others stand on the side and eye members of the opposite sex. That's what Madeline Veraz, a student at Pierce Middle School, was doing with her friend one night last summer.
"I like to listen to the music and watch the cute boys," she said.

All three evenings include an open kitchen serving nibble food: chicken wings, french fries, cheese sticks and non-alcoholic beverages. Purses are checked, and pockets are searched for weapons or any unauthorized items. A local disc jockey spins house, techno, dance, hip-hop. Smoking and gum-chewing are not permitted.
